Genital Warts Testing Singapore | HIV PEP

Genital Warts Testing in Singapore: Genital warts are skin growths present on the genitals and anus. They are caused by human papillomavirus infection, which is spread via sexual contact.

How can I test for genital warts?

Other bumps, including skin tags, penile papules, and syphilis sores, may be confused for genital warts. A doctor will perform a physical examination and other tests to diagnose the disease.

To confirm genital warts, your doctor will take biopsy samples for examination. If necessary, your doctor may perform colposcopy (examination of the cervix through a special camera) to check for warts on the cervix. Cervical examination is also performed to rule out HPV-related cancer.

The Pap smear test is a routine test to detect vaginal and cervical changes. The test can detect the early signs of cervical cancer. You doctor will use a speculum to hold the vaginal wall to collect samples for the Pap smear test. A few cells are scraped from the cervix with a blunt instrument, and are examined under a microscope for signs of cancer.

To make the lesions more visible, enhancing technique called acetowhitening are used. This technique involves application of acetic acid (vinegar) solution onto the affected area for at least 5-10 minutes. Warts will turn white with this treatment.

In unconfirmed and equivocal cases, your GP may ask for specialized tests to check for HPV genetic material.
