Definition
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease resulting from infection with an organism called Neisseria gonorrheae, also known as the gonococcus. The bacteria spread from one person to another through unprotected sexual contact. In infected humans, the bacteria are present in the vaginal fluid and in discharge from the penis. After exposure, the bacteria can infect the rectum, cervix, urethra, eyes, and throat. An infected mother can pass gonorrhea to her baby during birth. A previous history of treated gonorrhea does not offer protection against getting gonorrhea again.
You do not catch gonorrhea by normal social contact, such as sharing cups, bath towels, toilet seats, or swimming pools, or by hugging.
Causes
Gonorrhea spreads from one person to another through sexual activities, including oral, vaginal, or anal sex. If you are a pregnant mother, you can pass gonorrhea to your baby during vaginal delivery (this is called vertical transmission). Anyone who has multiple sex partners or sexually active or have unprotected sex can acquire gonorrhea easily. In Singapore, gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases.
