Syphilis Prevention in Singapore: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterial infection. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications in men and women.
Prevention of syphilis
You are at risk of acquiring syphilis if you have sex with an infected partner, even if he or she is asymptomatic. Following certain preventive measures will prevent exposure to syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Always use a condom (male or female) every time you have sex with your partner. Make sure to put the condom on before any sexual contact begins.
If you are not sure about the proper way to use a condom, ask your doctor to show you the correct method.
If you have oral sex, make sure to use a condom or a dental dam.
Use latex or a dental dam if you rub your vulva against a female partner’s vulva, as this contact can transmit syphilis.
Do not share sex toys with others. If you do, make sure to wash the toys properly between partners, or use a new condom to cover it each time it’s used.
Being mutually monogamous or abstaining from sex is the only guaranteed way to prevent sexually transmitted infections, including syphilis.
